Time really flies and now the course WRA 101 is drawing to an end. I have to say that I have really learned a lot from this course and some skills acquired in this course can benefit my whole life. I have not only improved my writing and learning capacity but also I have regained a new perspective toward college and the major.

Firstly, my writing capability has progressed much and I am able to express whatever thing by writing it down. Concerning writing, I hold that the skill of researching I obtain through this course can fit in well with almost all kinds of writing assignments. Through researching, I can get what others say about a certain topic so that I can get some insightful ideas from within. Also, I learn how to deal with annotations and citations when I apply the theory from other authors while conducting research, which is not emphasized when I was in China. In the past learning process, I tended to figure out my own thoughts about a certain topic simply by racking my brain on it without the awareness to research about it on the Internet, leading to my opinion seem to be somewhat limited in the end. Thanks to the competence in carrying out research, I can always look at an issue from various perspectives so that I can make a comprehensive analysis toward it in the due time.

Moreover, thanks to this course, I have formed the habit of discussing with my classmates in class and I quite enjoy exchanging opinions with them. I have to admit that different people will definitely have different thoughts toward the same topic and sometimes those thoughts will be vastly different. Discussing with others can enable me to learn quicker because I can master and digest all the opinions put forward by others at the same time. In addition, the habit of discussing with others also helps cultivate my logical and analytical thinking ability in that I have to figure out which idea may work better for a specific task. But what is a pity to say is that the opportunities to discuss in class is rare in China because the Chinese education determines that the teachers’ lecturing and the students’ listening is the dominant teaching method for all kinds of classes. Therefore students may not be encouraged to discuss with their classmates at all, let alone forming the habit of discussing and exchanging ideas with others. I am happy to discuss with others in class and there is some surprising ideas from my classmates all the time. However, some of my classmates are not accustomed to discussing with others and they deem that their own thought is the best, which calls for improvement in approaching days.

What can not be neglected is that this course has broadened my horizon to a large extent. Circling around in the class to discuss a series of topics about some news or other controversial things in the society has, as a matter of fact, got me familiar with the current affairs around. It is a shame for me to say that I am ill-informed on current affairs before this course and what I pay attention to mostly in my spare time is about some entertainment programs. Besides, I learn that study and life are interrelated with one another. In the first beginning, I am puzzled why the writing class should ask us to do service for other organizations and there is nothing to do with each other. But it is in the process of completing this project that I know that there are several aspects in our life that needs writing and study and life are mutually connected. For instance, the international students club that our group has serviced needs poster and flyer so that we are willing to give a hand to them to design poster and flyer for them. So you can have a fair knowledge that while designing poster and flyer for the club, we can put what we have learned in this course to practice. When the service for that club finishes, I am proud that I can use my learned knowledge to help others so that I have made up my decision to learn as hard as possible in order to make contributions toward the society in the future. During the process of serving for that club, I have also begun to understand the power of teamwork and the joy to cooperate with others, which can help me get along well with others in the meantime.

Last but not the least comes that I really benefit a lot from the idea that one has to frequently leave one’s own comfort zone to communicate with others and make friends with them. Only in this way can one be able to adjust themselves quickly to a new environment. It can be easy to understand in that there will be all kinds of unexpected conditions that will appear in our life which may not be in our comfort zone, but we should still face them.
