Summary
The young athletes’ performance of organized sports is evaluated by measurement of winning or losing, which are the standards adopted for adults. The outcome for children players, however, are physically and psychological harmful, rather than positive and promising.
As far as physical damage is concerned, traumas left on less matured body are considered by sports experts bad for children’s growing body (quoted in par. 3), although risks of being injured in the games are relatively lower. Contact actions should be avoided for children players.
Psychologically speaking, children athletes should enjoy sports activities. Nevertheless, they have to bear with the psychological trauma due to the fear of being physically injured. Besides, they also have concerns of being knocked out from the competition. It exerts huge psychological pressure over them. When winning becomes the first priority of the sports activities for the children, their pleasant feelings and enjoyment are gone.
All in all, winning and losing may be an inevitable part of adult life (quoted in par. 6). Children, however, should not be educated on such issue. What they should know at early stage is to learn, to find friends, and to enjoy from the sports.
Strong Response
As a primary school teacher, I, with over ten years of educational experience, strongly oppose children’s participation in those highly competitive sports activities mentioned the article. Reasons for supporting my theory are as follows:
First of all, parents with rational way of thinking believe that injuries should be strictly avoided for children competitors in the sports games. “It took my son for almost one year to heal from the broken ankle surgery in the school football games held last year. Doctor told me that such injuries were very hard to recover. So, I decided to quit my job to better take care of my poor 11-year-old boy”, a mother of one of my student told me in anonymity.
Further, competitive sports activities could exert great psychological pressure over kids. “Winning in the competition almost drives me crazy,” John, 11-year-old kid, complained to me even after he and his team members won the seasonal basketball games in the local community. “I’d rather sit on the bench to watch the games in the arena,” he adds. Therefore, it is obvious to see that those young players shoulder great psychological burden. “In fact, winning is not what young athletes want the most. Cooperation and support each other are what they should learn from sports games,” a baseball coach named Leo twittered online yesterday and it got over 100 favorites and over 200 responses within an hour after the post.
Noncompetitive games are the best choice!
“Noncompetitive games should be widely promoted among the children population, since such activities could generate for young gamers a real sense of enjoyment, which matches perfectly with the psychological characteristics of the kids at early stage,” said Steven James, a professor with children’s psychological health research institute in Beijing. Several researches show that over 86% of primary school students in Beijing believe that there should not be any real winners and losers in the children’s sports. And 89% of surveyed interviewees argue that noncompetitive games are the best choice.
Teamwork spirit does matter!
I collaborated this summer with volunteer parents and kids of my class to implement an experiment on the comparison and contrast between non-competitive and competitive games. Half of children are selected to participate in the cooperative games. They were told to finish an interesting task together. They brainstormed together under the guidance of instructor. Then, they took the role of teamwork spirit into full play to successfully build a smarter bridge with soft drink straws within 15 minutes. What surprised all is the cooperative outcome they generated. No winners, but collaborators are there at last. Well, the rest of the class was ordered to separate into two teams. They, under the strict supervision, fought for each other on the fierce football match. Winners and losers were both exhausted and depressed at last. “We did support the non-competitive sports activities in comparison with competitive games, since our kids’ minds were developed, and they positively collaborated with each other, rather than end up with unpleasant feeling in the winner-or-loser games,” kept by parents, the observers in such experiment.
To sum up, children are the future and hopes of our society. All kinds of events should target their physical and psychological development. Competitive sports activities, however, could not help our offspring achieve the target, according to the analysis of the article and my personal response. Instead, non-competitive gaming events should be implemented in the wide range. Because they can well match with children’s physical and psychological development needs.
