A Discussion of Oakhurst’s strength or weakness in the Outcasts of Poker Flat

There seems to be a conflict in terms of personality of Oakhurst throughout the story: on the one hand, Oakhurst is the strongest but on the other hand, he is the weakest. Oakhurst’s specific actions throughout the story as well as narrative of the narrator will be analyzed and evaluated to determine the cause of Oakhurst’s suicide. It argues that Oakhurst’s final act of suicide is a result of personal strength.

Oakhurst is the weakest as faced with a fierce environment he had to live in an unethical manner and accept the cruel treatment towards him of Poker Flat. On the one hand, the Poker Flat with their local prejudice treated people like Oakhurst in a simple and brutal way, by expulsing people with misconduct. Faced with such prejudice, he had no power to fight against the verdict on his fate. “Mr. Oakhurst received his sentence” (Hart, chapter 4). On the other hand, he felt sad and suffered a lot for his miserable and unethical life. There is a description of the psychological activity of Oakhurst after he was in exile: “the loneliness begotten of his pariah-trade, his habits of life, his very vices, for the first time seriously oppressed him” (Hart, chapter 9). When he became an outcast, he felt lonely and shameful of his trade as a gambler. Oakhurst in fact had no social status and enjoyed no social respect at all due to his despicable business. However, the implementation of unethical behavior in the course of his efforts to survive is indeed his reaction to this cruel society which is marked by crowded environment, gambling, theft, hunger, cold and death. Faced with the hard pressure of survival and violent, crime-ridden environment in the Gold Rush, many people were addicted to bad habits, living an immoral life. This also left Oakhurst no choice. Oakhurst, who had little choice of life and low social status, was treated by others in a random manner. So, he was in a rather passive position in his life, and thus the weakest. 

At the same time, Oakhurst is the strongest ：although he accepted the miserable fate , he faced it in a calm manner, remained the good side of human nature in the harsh environment later, and at last was bold enough to finish his life himself instead of waiting for the death. Oakhurst, described as “a coolly desperate man” in the short story, was not concerned and worry about the death. After learning about his possible fate, he calmly accepted the verdict of the great purge, and coldly knows the judges’ hesitation. It was written that “With him life was at best an uncertain game, and he recognized the usual percentage in favor of the dealer” (Hart, chapter 4). In his view, life at best is but an unreliable gamble, and he knew that the dealer is usually to take advantage of a few percent of the total chance. Also, the silence and calmness of Oakhurst formed a sharp contrast with “hysterical tears from the Duchess, some bad language from Mother Shipton, and a Parthian volley of expletives from Uncle Billy” (Hart, chapter 6). Oakhurst embodied the worship of money, adventure, democracy and freedom, which is an integral part of American culture. The novel also reflects the author's understanding of human nature. The fighting against the naturally harsh environment makes the return of good nature. He pointed out the fact that they do not have enough provision to his companions and encouraged them by using a metaphor, namely it is fool act of “throwing up their hand before the game was played out.”(Hart, chapter 8). In the harsh natural environment, The Duchess was “putting her head upon Piney’s shoulder, spoke no more” and “the younger and purer pillowing the head of her soiled sister upon her virgin breast, they fell asleep” (Hart, chapter 30). Unlike those who were staying together praying and waiting silently for what the destiny planned for them, Oakhurst chose to become the owner of his own fate this time.  When he died, he left his name and last words on the earth. The way he committed a suicide can be called brave as his life was finished “with a Derringer by his side and a bullet in his heart” (Hart, chapter 30) as the shooting caused a lot of physical pain and it took a lot of courage for people to die in such a manner. Thus, suicide is not a symbol of cowardice and weakness. When he returned to the nature, his courage returned to him once again. It implied that the distorted human nature of Oakhurst was caused within the unjust social system, and the law of survival of fittest.  It has proven once again the masculinity and manhood of Oakhurst. 

In fact, Oakhurst had a strong character in nature facing the setbacks but the system of capitalism made him powerless. There is more use of realistic documentary techniques and unique western-style humor in the Outcasts of Poker Flat. It revealed the dark side of reality during the California Gold Rush, and exposed the hard life of people with lower social status wealth under the cover of wealth accumulation. People's living environment is full of chaos and lacks of security, which is very far away from the bourgeois flaunt democracy, and the rule of law. The way to solve crime in Poker Flat is great purge. Although the hero of the short story---Oakhurst had some misconduct, he was indeed one member of vulnerable groups of society, and had the lower status.

In conclusion, the death of the main character --- Oakhurst in the Outcasts of Poker Flat is a tragedy. But the death is not caused by personal weakness. Its death in fact reflects the oppressing force of the system of capitalism which could turn people with spirits of social progress and optimism and strong characteristics into a person lack of choice and respect.
