In this week, I participated in the Draft Conference together with fellow students in professor’s office and it was the first time I had a face-to-face writing conference. This is a valuable opportunity as well as a new challenge for me. During the conference, I actively provided feedback and comments on how to improve their writings. To ensure the suggestions I proposed are conducive to developing the papers, I spare no effort in analyzing the problems I came across.

At first, I found as many mistakes as I could and gave detailed instruction on corrections such as appropriate word or phrase should be used for specific context. However, it turned out to be a counterproductive method. According to the principles put forward by Ferris and Hedgcock, it is the writer not the teacher who should be held responsible for the final decision about revision and contents of a paper (242). Once I told students how to correct mistakes in details, chances are that they would blindly follow the instructions and keep making the same kind of mistakes unconsciously in future. In other words, it is not a constructive way to help students to develop a conscious mind in writing papers, because I make the decision without actively engaging them in the process of correction. Therefore, during the second meeting, I changed my strategy and raised some basic problems in the paper in order to engage students in coming up with ideas and fixing the mistakes themselves.

Apart from the correction process, I also summary two primary problems in ESL students’ writings and these problems involve both language and idea issues that are prevalent among these students. Ferris and Hedgcock suggest that teacher should provide feedback on a range of issues not limiting to a certain area of concern (241). The biggest and most prominent problem I came across in reading the students’ papers is that ESL students are prone to apply “writing template” in their essays. They prefer to blindly using flashy words and phrases in order to make their papers look better at the expense of grammar accuracy and overall coherence. Students mistakenly believe in the power of complex words and sentences and lose sight of the importance of real content. In my point of view, skillful use of simple words can convey the main points more clearly and is the right way to develop the paper. Another major problem with ESL writing is that students fail to discuss their ideas and thoughts in detail or in depth, superficial and shallow points are commonplace instead. They are not use to applying telling examples which can be the Swiss army knife for their arguments. A lot of ESL students in this class are from China where professors always told them to express their ideas without critical thinking or in-depth analysis of those ideas. I therefore told them the importance of using simple words to develop ideas in a coherent and logical way consciously.

In conclusion, thanks to the participation in writing conference this week, I think I become aware of the problems of ESL students’ paper and what are the constructive feedback for those problems. Although different kinds of mistakes are made in their papers, I find out as many as I can and correct them collectively with fellow students. I tend to believe that they can do much better in future.
