In 2013, the name of Edward Snowden became well-known around the world, due to disclosing USA National Security Agency having been hacking into over 61,000 computers for years, as well as collecting personal data from different servers including Microsoft, Google, Yahoo, Facebook, PalTalk, AOL, Skype, YouTube and Apple (Gamble, 2014). With millions of private information being stolen, one might wonder that whether technological advancements indeed improve our daily lives.
Nancy Baym proposed that new media is the cause of cultural anxieties in “Personal Connections in the Digital Age”. As he said in the article, “the more you use them, the more they use you, and the more you are influenced by them” (Baym, 2015). Although it is been said that social media offers a platform for introversive person to express themselves openly and freely without face-to-face interaction, an Australian research discovered that social media, as a matter of fact, increased psychological pressures. 63% of the interviewees claimed that they are anxious thinking that their friends on social network will leave them messages and waiting for their replies (Agrawal, 2013). Besides, a sense of insecurity also exists among social media. Most people tend to spend a long time to prettify their personal information and pictures on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram etc., while others will still seem to be funnier than they are, thus leading to the sense of insecurity.
Not only new media, but also modern design is put forward by Donald Norman in “The Psychopathology of Everyday Things” without being discoverability and understanding for users. Norman illustrated how the complex modern designs led to confusions and inconveniences to daily lives, such as a swinging door with two sides, fancy new Italian washer-dryer combination etc. (Norman, 2002). The purposes of new designs are satisfying physiological and psychological needs, without which the designs will be meaningless.
It is believed that “science and technology constitute a primary productive force”, however, people have not realized the negative influences advanced technology brings to daily lives. Internet, even though shortens the distance among people from different countries, decreases the opportunities of them making face-to-face communications. Modern designs aiming at increasing the efficiency of people’s lives have opposite effects on the contrary. New technology is double-edged, which should be applied to daily lives reasonably. For instance, Internet is an ideal method for contacting with friends far away, while friends in real lives should not be overlooked. Besides Internet and modern designs, is there anything in digital age that has negative influences towards our lives.
