Presidential debates are vital to candidates, as they have put so much effort in the election. The candidate that I pick is Donald Trump. Although many believe that Trump is a joke as he had simply gave the solution of building a wall for the issue of undocumented foreigners, I think that Trump’s campaign will achieve great success if it uses the presidential debate platform in the correct way.
To begin with, Trump needs to establish a cool, straightforward image on the TV debate. In the past, Trump had shown distrust of the media and his past image for most people are in his reality show, ‘The Apprentice’, yelling ‘you are fired’ (Tucker, 2015). However, this stereotype can be changed if he appears at the presidential debate acting smart, polite and honest. The public actually didn’t care much about the content of the debate, but what the candidates looked like and feel life on television (Schroeder, 2016). Compared to Clinton whose good health is in doubt, Trump clearly has a slight advantage of being a healthy, confident candidate that believe in ‘making America great again’.
Trump’s campaign also needs to stay firm on his attitude, which should be more than willing to participate in the debate. Presidential debates on television always had fascination for both the public and the press as it is unscripted, authentic, and yet choreographed to blur the line between what is real and what is not (Schroeder, 2016). Therefore the public is really looking forward to the debate and will despise any candidate that seems to have hesitated to participate. Reluctance to debate would appear as an act of cowardice. When Bush hesitated to debate with Bill Clinton, many citizens dressed up as chickens to satire his prototype (Schroeder, 2016). His opposition then received lead from his reluctance to debate and the press dramatically magnified the event. Therefore Trump must not avoid the debate but to bravely accept the offer to show his courageous image to the public.
Another thing Trump’s campaign should design is his response to possible challenges from his opponent during the debate. Debates can give presidential candidates that are in a less favored position much political advantage besides being a civic duty. For instance, the Ford campaign needed some dramatic elements to make the country reverse their judgment on the candidate, and it actually chose to debate for its self-interest (Schroeder, 2016). If Trump can give smart answers to Clinton’s harsh questions, he can win over more supporters as it changes his image among those people. The lens would magnify everything they say, their gestures, and looks on their faces not only for that election campaign but also for a lifelong impact. By responding the questions with logic and honest answers, Trump’s poll might go up immediately as he has shown improvement during the election.
Campaigns for presidency has been selecting moderators and panelists in the debates with the participants actively choosing their questioners. For the optimum questioners of Trump, it would best be patriots and journalists who are interested in Trump’s platforms of political issues. Although TV networks such as CBS, ABC, and NBC are quite unlikely to support Trump for both his campaigns and treatment to the press, Trump is great for their business and ratings. Therefore, the ideal questioner should be someone not from these presses that have hostile attitude towards Trump, but rather someone who actually might vote for him. The questioner can speak straightforwardly with questions relating to the value of workers and labor that benefited from Trump’s policies and show that the communication between the people and Trump is without rank. If journalists from the television networks that have hostility towards Trump are elected as questioners, the consequence might be harsh for his campaign. They might throw out questions that accuse him of racism, ignorant, and sexist. Therefore ensuring the optimal questioners is essential in Trump’s winning scheme towards presidency.
