Recently, as the business market becomes more competitive these days, the success of a company does not only depend on the investment on marketing or hiring professional salesmen, it is important to have a leader or a manager who can run the company and manage his or her employees effectively. In fact, the emotional intelligence of a leader means whether a leader is able to manage well the relationship among the employees, promote a healthier and happier working environment in the company and achieve better self-management.

The main factor in the emotional intelligence is about self-awareness as well as self-management. In fact, when a leader is able to understand his own emotions and adapt his own emotions, he will not unconsciously pass on negative emotions to the employees. It is true that a person might have suffered from personal troubles such as a bad marriage, a catastrophic divorce or the death of his family members. However, a professional manager or leader is the one who can leave his personal troubles behind in work as he understands that once he brought it in the office, it will lower down the efficiency of the company’s development and the employees’ work. Also, a good leader knows how to leave the grudge behind as long as it is for the best interests of the company. Take Steve Jobs as an example, although he was fired from his own company by his partners, when he got back in the company, he did not hold grudges. On the contrary, he dedicated his knowledge and energy to make sure the company will strive, which is the foundation of the success of Apple Products.

Also, a good leader is the one that knows how to make sure all employees enjoy working for him. In the past, a factory or a company might be able to make huge profits by exploiting the employees in some way, such as saving cost on their welfare, forcing them to work overtime at night and at weekend, or cutting off their meals to save more for marketing. However, a company like this might make quick profits in a short time, but in a long term, the leader of his company will lose talents and he will need to take fresh graduates all the time, which is not a healthy way of development for a successful company.

On the contrary, the leaders with good emotional intelligence understand their employees’ need, which they try hard to satisfy. Take Nichola Tse, a successful leader in a post-production company in Hong Kong as an example, when he shared his experiences of starting the company, he said that he consulted his employees about what office they life when he rented an office. The reason is, according to him, “they are the one who need to work for me in this place and I need to make sure they feel happy working for me”. That is the reason why many professional and experienced employees from the Dream Factory in Shang Hai abandoned their high salary to work for him.

To conclude, a leader’s emotional intelligence is very essential in managing a large group of employees and the success of a company depends on it. It is obvious that when a leader has the ability to control his emotions to make sure he passes on the positive influence in the company, his employees will be motivated to dedicate themselves in their work. Also, a good leader understands and cares for his employees instead of solely exploiting them, which helps promoting a harmonious work relationship in the company.
